Metallic Materials Department Holds First Language Study Session and Social Mixer

JFE Shoji’s Metallic Materials Department held its first afterhours language study and social mixer on August 26, drawing six department members. The department has many overseas trading partners, and many of its employees are interested in foreign languages. That spurred the creation of this new event, which promotes fellowship within the department through language study.
The language selected for the first study session was Chinese. China is home to more of the department’s trading partners than any other country, and two native Chinese speakers work in the department.
The study session began with basic greetings and self-introductions by these employees before moving on to topics such as daily conversation and ordering food at a restaurant. The participants also received two traditional Chinese confections, White Rabbit candy and haw flakes, which they enjoyed while discussing how these sweets differ from Japanese sweets. The group went to a Chinese restaurant for the social mixer after the study session, and had a chance to practice ordering food using the Chinese they learned.
One participant commented, “I went home and immediately demonstrated my introduction in Chinese to my husband!” Another said, “I found the pronunciation difficult at first, but I look forward to using Chinese in my work.”
The department plans to hold study sessions focusing on Korean, Portuguese and other languages at upcoming events.
