| Developing steel business in Japan |
Iron ore and coal the chief materials for iron manufacturing.
JFE Shoji Trade has developed along with the expansion of Japan's iron and steel industry and the import of raw materials for iron and steel manufacturing. We have entered into development projects aimed at meeting the demand for stable supply to make raw materials more competitive.
[ Coal ] We import high-grade coal from Australia, Canada, China, Russia and Indonesia. In 1998, we joined the Coppabella coal mine development project in Queensland, Australia, and acquired rights and interests in coal exported to Japan. In 2004, we reached agreement on rights and interests and a long-term transactions contract with the Carborough Downs coal mine in Queensland, Australia and the Glennies Creek coal mine, also in New South Wales, Australia. Thus, we are able to more rapidly predict the needs of iron and steelmakers, and respond faster to increase our market share.
[ Iron Ore ] Approximately 50% of iron ore we import from Australia. The remainder is from Brazil, India and other countries. JFE Shoji Trade is committed to reinforcing competitive strength by achieving a stable supply of high-grade iron ore from the Goa region of India.
Our involvement in iron ore exports is not confined to Japan alone, but includes trade with other countries, too. JFE Shoji Trade is involved in increasing iron ore transactions accompanying the growth of crude steel production in China. Observing the potential of the Chinese market, we are occupied with the sale of India's iron ore to China.
[ Carbon ] JFE Shoji Trade is expanding this part of the business, mainly through a stable supply of the world's premium- grade coke from China to the JFE Group. We are focusing on undersized cokes generated by JFE Steel, and conducting transactions with interested parties, including Japanese ferrous alloy manufacturers. While matching the needs for both volume and quality for electric furnace, non- ferrous and coal users, we are developing a full range of services nationwide.

| Expanding international trade in Asia |
[ Scrap Iron ] JFE Shoji Trade's efforts to expand the sale of scrap iron extends to the whole of East Asia. We handle the scrap iron generated by the JFE Group, and secure dedicated loading berths at JFE Steel (East Japan Work) in Chiba prefecture to improve the efficiency of ocean freight forwarding.
We work at reinforcing collection of information on dismantling iron, improve shipping capability for scrap on the market and increase the number of new customers.
[ Light Metals and Ferrous Alloys ] We have expanded the import of ferrous/non-ferrous raw materials to assure stable supplies mainly to JFE Steel. We are also seeking to further expand by dealing with domestic and overseas electric furnaces, while conducting exports and intermediary transactions in East Asia.
